We received another palette of turntables today, so we have plenty of turntables for everybody! Especially the LP60-USB with which you can record your vinyl music to digital mp3 files. It's $135. This is a great gift for anyone who wants to archive a collection, has a rare collection of vinyl, wants to digitize their collection, or enjoys making music, especially by sampling beats or other parts of songs. And, of course, it's great for just sitting on the couch and listening to records, too!

We have the Audio-Technica LP60 (the basic model) in silver or metallic red (only four red ones left!), it's $115 and our best seller!

The direct drive LP120-USB with S-arm, upgraded cartridge, counterweight, and three speeds (comparable to the Technics 1200) is priced at $285, and is the PERFECT GIFT for the audiophile on your list who is serious about vinyl records.

We also carry Dayton Audio speakers and amps! Stop in and we'll show you our display model!

Where to buy a turntable in Columbus

Our workhorse: the Audio Technica AT-LP60
In 2014, Spoonful became an authorized Audio Technica dealer.  We've been carrying the Audio Technica AT-LP60 turntable for 5 years, but now we get them factory-direct!  It's a great little turntable!  It's easy to use, compact, belt-driven and plays at 45 or 33 1/3 RPM.  With its built-in preamp, you can actually connect it directly to powered speakers (like computer speakers) or other components that have no dedicated turntable input.  Our price: $115.

We also offer the USB version of this turntable as well (it looks exactly the same except for the usb cord coming out the back) that you can hook up to your PC or Mac and allows you to make mp3 recordings of your vinyl music. It is great for people who make music and want to sample stuff or have a collection to archive. The Audio Technica AT-LP60-USB is $135.

    The Audio Technica AT-LP120-USB
New this year, we started carrying the Audio Technica AT-LP120. At $285, it's a bit of an investment, but well worth it. The counter-weighted "S" arm tracks the grooves much better than straight arm models, it's a  direct drive model with a professional cartridge, pitch control, forward and reverse capability, and three speeds: 33, 45, & 78 RPM.

THE VINYL STARTER KIT: We've done a lot of research and really wanted to offer an affordable, complete set-up solution for those first-time buyers, so we have paired the AT-LP60 with a couple of bookshelf Dayton Audio speakers (designed right here in Ohio) and a very compact Lepai amp, for the combo price of $190. This makes a great Christmas gift for anybody who wants to get started spinning vinyl!

PLEASE NOTE: we assemble each turntable we sell, so you never have to struggle with putting a belt on a turntable.  We sell turntables ready-to-go out of the box!!

So if you are looking for a turntable in the Columbus area, come to Spoonful Records.  We are happy to show you how it works, play the display model for you, and, you might notice, it's the same turntable we have behind the counter--our daily workhorse!  If you stop by during the week, ask Fred to show you!

Replacement cartridges are also available.  Questions? Call us at 614-586-1918.

Record Store Crawl / Record Store Map for Columbus, OH -- October 2015

Hi Everybody, in anticipation of the Record Store Crawl on October 24, 2015, here is the updated record store map.

We will be open EARLY for the Record Store Crawl on Saturday, October 24 at 10 am with coffee and donuts, and we will have an EARLY BIRD SALE--20% off all used vinyl & $2 off new LPs FROM 10 AM TO NOON ONLY. So make Spoonful your first stop and then head north and hit up all the wonderful record stores Columbus has to offer!!!

Map notes: In three and a half years, two stores (Broken Records and Records Per Minute) were added and two stores (Dreadful Sounds and Johnny Go's) were removed.  Johnny's might still be open at the time of this writing, but reports of the closing due to Campus Partners planning have been widely circulated. Vinyl Frontier & Strange Loop opened and closed abruptly within the last couple years, so they never made it on the map at all. Our hats off to all the stores, as Brett likes to say when he's placing orders on his "day off": running a retail operation ain't no joke!

Numero Night 002 - October 3rd, 2015 6-8 pm

The next installment of Numero Night is scheduled for October 3rd from 6-8pm. (Numero Group is small label out of Chicago that has been putting back into circulation some very cool tunes, with a focus on localized old soul, psych, and gospel. We love them because they do great work, give you the back story, and did this: http://www.numerogroup.com/products/eccentric-soul-the-capsoul-label )

In this edition of Numero Night, we will be introducing Tom Smith who ran Owl Studios in Columbus, Ohio with his brother Sterling & will be sharing stories and photos/memorabilia from their days at the Studio/Record Label. Notably, Owl put out the Wee record "You Can Fly on my Aeroplane" (1977) and Raven's "Back to Ohio Blues" (1975).

BONUS: Once again Numero Group gave us lots of cool stuff TO GIVE AWAY!!

With permission of the label owners, and help from Abnormal Allies, we have pressed a limited number of OWL LABEL T-SHIRTS! They look totally cool and can be purchased for $15 only at Spoonful Records.

There's no pressure to buy anything--just come, hang out, listen and explore some great music with the Spoonful Gang!

There's a great person behind every great collection!

Well, it must be spring fever, because everybody's been cleaning out their closets, basements and garages lately and selling their old records.  We don't mind! Without the used selection in our store, there would be few surprises and fewer collectibles.

Arnita walked into the store the other day and left her name and number, saying she had a collection to sell: "Oh, a little bit of everything," is what she said.  What she meant was "a lot of everything, especially great soul, funk, disco, and jazz."

Arnita's house was a crazy visual puzzle of collecting cool stuff over 4 decades. A macrame hanging, a cassette player in the shape of a Cadillac, an oil self-portrait her son Duriel made at CCAD, an oversized coffee cup proclaiming "Huge Mug of Shut the F&(k Up," and a light-up aquarium she uses as a gigantic floral arrangement container were the first things to catch the eye. Her office literally had not a single space of wall unadorned. Post-it notes, papers, pictures, books, and piles of cool old stuff were everywhere. A vintage faux-leather suitcase full of old cameras. A Star Trek board game. An album of Lead Belly 78s. Gizmo & GI Joe dolls lined the tops of shelves. Just for starters.

Like her house, Arnita herself is a whirlwind of activity. The sweet warm scent of barbecue filled the house as she prepares & delivers meal-on-wheels for shut-ins in her area. She volunteers for the King Arts Center and spent 16 hours working the polls for the mayoral election. She's a blogger and an educator in her spare time, and that's just what we learned about her in a couple of hours.  Even as we packed up and hauled out 26 heavy boxes of records and an IKEA bookcase out of her house, somehow she still managed to keep busier than we did.

Her ex-husband was a DJ at a Columbus jazz radio station back in the day. We asked if the records were mostly his. She laughed and said, "When I met him, he was green as a pool table and twice as square." No, the collection is mostly hers.  Arnita grew up in the DC area and worked at a record store called the Harmony Hut. (She asked the owner for a job and he said, "well, who is John Lennon?," and she said, "he's a Beatle," so he hired her.) She moved to Columbus in 1979.

A keen & inquisitive mind is evident through her collection: Philip Glass, Pink Floyd, Miles Davis and Windham Hill recordings are sprinkled into a deep collection of the disco, funk, soul & fusion of the 70's and 80's, strongly represented by Ohio Players, Funkadelic, Parliament, Curtis Mayfield, and Herbie Hancock.

If you happen to walk into Spoonful in the next few months and we are spinning disco, you can thank Arnita. It's full on dance party time.

Record Store Day this year is Saturday, April 18th.  We will be open from 8 am - 8 pm with TONS of exclusive vinyl RSD releases and 20% off used records. Some of the awesome things coming out on RSD are:

It is very limited, and you can only get it at independent record stores.

The Dead Milkmen’s snotty but genius “Beelzebubba” album, which includes the epic love song “Punk Rock Girl,” It's limited to 3900 Blue & random 100 White Colored Vinyl.

Brand New’s super exclusive release “Deja Entendu” on heavyweight vinyl with digital download and lyric book, patch, sticker sheet, and paper bag outer sleeve.  It's limited to 1500 copies, but we ordered LOTS!!!

Phish - New Year's Eve 1995, Live at Madison Square Garden. The legendary performance is the first live concert released by Phish on vinyl. It's issued as a six lp box set on 180 gram vinyl, and limited to 4500 copies!!!
But there is so much more: For the whole RSD list, click here!  And we ordered LOTS of it!! Check our Facebook page 24-48 hours before doors open and we will have photos posted of the records and their placement in the store.

How RSD works: We are not allowed to sell any exclusive RSD releases before 8 am. We do not take reservations and cannot hold items. That means that those who wait in line will be rewarded! Limit one per person please on all exclusive RSD releases!

Swag Bags will be given out until they run out (usually the first 100-150 people get one.) This year's swag includes goodies from Audio Technica & CD102.5, RSD exclusive stuff like music samplers, as well as wax from Columbus' own Orchestraville.

Explorer's Club will be bringing the food truck starting at 6 am.

We will have two registers going again and lots of helpers. We encourage shoppers to PLEASE PAY WITH CASH which helps everyone get through the line faster!

Street parking is pretty ample around our store and free until 9am. The free lot is the gravel one we share with B1 Bikes.

Thanks for supporting your downtown Columbus record store and all the awesome little record stores in Columbus. This is truly a great vinyl town!!!

Happy 2015!

Just a quick note to say Happy New Year!  We are so thankful for each and every customer and friend that walked through the door to help make 2014 our best year yet.  Please continue to let us know what records you are looking for and which new vinyl releases you are excited about.  We are here to serve you!

We currently have lots of AT-LP60 turntables IN STOCK.  The USB version of this model, which allows you to digitize your vinyl records to MP3s, will be back in stock next week, as it has been backordered due to high demand. Awesomely enough, Audio Technica is a Stow, OH company, so you can buy local and help support the Ohio economy as well!!

We have added to our offerings inner and outer paper and plastic sleeves for LPs and 45s and replacement cartridges for Audio Technica LP-60 turntables.

We get a lot of questions about buying collections. YES!  We are always buying records, new and used.  We invite persons with large collections to sell to call Amy at 214-9931 to schedule an appointment.  If you have a manageable number (just a handful or a few boxes) of good, used records (jazz, classical, bluegrass, pop, punk, rock n roll, metal or soul), please stop by on Sundays between noon and five o'clock.

And lastly, Record Store Day is April 18, 2015!  Mark your calendar!  Once again, we will be open 8am to 8pm and fully loaded with RSD exclusive releases. In central Ohio, nobody offers a wider or bigger selection of RSD special releases than Spoonful Records!!!!
